Why Europe is now a hotspot for deadly heatwaves

By 2010–2019, that Nature study estimates climate change made typical heatwaves about 200 times more likely than in the pre-industrial climate.[10] When scientists now say this 2026 event would have been “virtually impossible” without human warming, they align with that broad pattern.[1][10] Some critics point out that attribution studies cannot say “climate change alone caused this,” and they are right in a narrow sense.[13] But for heatwaves, the evidence is now so strong that arguing they are just bad luck ignores the weight of serious science and basic common sense.

Hospitals, power grids, and politics: the man-made weak links

Europe’s health systems were never designed for repeated weeks of lethal heat. Many older hospitals lack modern cooling, and several countries cut bed numbers and staff in recent years, leaving less slack when mass heat illness hits.[8] Heat does not just cause dehydration and fainting. It pushes heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, and mental confusion, especially in people over 65 or those on certain medicines.[8] That means more ambulance calls, more scans, more intensive care, all at once.

Energy systems add another layer of risk. In France, experts warn that nuclear power can become less reliable during heatwaves because warm river water limits reactor cooling, which can lead to partial shutdowns and strain the grid.[3] When people need air conditioning the most, power can wobble. That is not climate change in the narrow sense; it is a planning failure in a world we now know will keep getting hotter. Conservative logic says you harden vital infrastructure once the risk is proven. Here, the risk is proven.

Culture wars over air conditioning and adaptation

Even where electricity is available, many Europeans still see air conditioning as wasteful or “un-green.” Polling in France shows roughly three-quarters of people view air conditioning as bad for the environment, which slows adoption of a tool that can sharply cut heat deaths when used wisely.[3] Far-right politicians push for big subsidies to install units in homes and public spaces. Environmental groups and hard-left parties call air conditioning a “false solution” that worsens emissions and distracts from long-term climate cuts.[3]

This stalemate leaves many vulnerable people stuck in hot, badly insulated apartments with few options besides wet towels and fans. A straightforward, balanced approach would focus on two tracks at once: aggressive emission cuts to tackle the root problem, and serious investment in adaptation, including cooling centers, better building codes, smart air conditioning, and clear public health messaging. That is basic prudence, not ideological surrender. As heatwaves keep overwhelming hospitals, voters will judge leaders less by slogans and more by whether their relatives survive the next red-alert summer.[8]
