Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Bill Passed 221-198 Despite Democrat Dissapproval

(OurNationNews.com) The SAVE bill passed the House 221 to 198 across party lines and against Democratic opposition. The bill would provide extra protections to ensure noncitizens do not vote in United States federal elections.

If passed by the Senate and signed by the president, states would be required to obtain proof of citizenship in person before a person can be registered to vote. It also mandates that states remove anyone from the voter rolls that is not a citizen.

The bill provides penalties against officials that register noncitizens to vote and allows citizens to bring lawsuits against election officials that fail to uphold the mandated procedures.

Democrats have denounced the bill as being restrictive and have said it would cause citizens to be removed unnecessarily from the voter rolls. Meanwhile, President Biden has said he would veto the bill if it makes it to his desk. The White House released a statement that said it is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections, which is punishable with jail time and fines.

Speaker Mike Johnson has denounced Democrats that voted against the act and said they want illegal immigrants to be able to vote in federal elections. He said the open border policies of the Biden administration and influx of immigrants crossing the border illegally is what makes this bill especially important right now.

Johnson said it is important to maintain election integrity by not allowing people to easily sign up to vote when signing up for welfare without providing any proof of citizenship.

Senator Tommy Tuberville along with Representatives Chip Roy and Mike Lee worked on the bill together. Tuberville said Senator Chuck Schumer laughed at them and said the bill wouldn’t ever make it to the floor for a vote.

A 2017 study found that it is rare for noncitizens to vote in federal elections with only 30 examples out of 42 million votes. According to one report, about 9% of eligible voters do not have documentation to prove their citizenship.
