(OurNationNews.com) -Ohio’s Republican Governor Mike DeWine has approved legislation that will ensure that President Joe Biden will be appearing as a presidential candidate in ballots in the state’s elections later this year, along with a separate measure that prohibits U.S. permanent legal residents from contributing to the campaigns of individuals running for office in the state.
The said separate measure is an expansion of existing state law that prohibits “foreign nationals” from donating to local campaigns. The filing extension, which will come into force in August 31 along with the other law on campaign contributions, ensures Biden’s appearance on the ballot by allowing the president’s campaign to file his candidacy even though the state’s deadline for filing has already passed.
The measures for the filing extension as well as the expansion of the “foreign national” definition for campaign contributions were approved during a special legislative session, and passed overwhelmingly in both state congress and senate. The Buckeye State’s senate however, which is dominated by Republicans, was behind the main push for the expansion of the provision banning foreign nationals from making campaign contributions.
Republican State Senator Rob McColley said that the motion was by no means an indication of support for Biden, but rather an initiative to ensure that Ohioans have all the options possible come election time. Democrats in Ohio’s legislature are pushing to make the extension permanent, but Republicans say that they will hold off further decisions on the matter until they consult with other local officials.
Biden is also set to be nominated by Democratic National Committee through a virtual roll call, enabling the Biden-Harris campaign to file the required documentation in states that have early filing deadlines like Ohio. The full national convention for the DNC, where Biden is expected to be formally nominated as the party’s presidential candidate, will be held in late August. The equivalent convention for the Republican National Committee, where former president Donald Trump is set to be proclaimed as the party’s standard-bearer, will be held earlier – in the middle of July.
