(OurNationNews.com) A federal grand jury is now looking at evidence that allegedly ties New York Mayor Eric Adams to illegal contributions from the Turkish government in exchange for favors. In the fall of 2023, the FBI confiscated personal devices from Mayor Adams, including his cell phones and iPad. He allegedly received free upgrades on Turkish airlines and illegal campaign contributions from the Turkish government.
The Turkish government paid $300 million to build a 35-story tower in New York City. Mayor Adams allegedly spoke with the fire commissioner and pressured him to sign off on fire safety issues related to the building. The fire officials had concerns about the safety of the building and refused to permit occupation.
Mayor Adams was asked for his thoughts on the status of the case and he responded that he had “no idea” what was going on. Adams further stated that he is a mayor and not a lawyer. A subpoena was given to at least one person closely working alongside the mayor that prevents the individual from speaking about the contents of the subpoena.
During an unrelated press conference on June 10, reporters asked Adams about the subpoena and the grand jury. Mayor Adams called the case a distraction and indicated that reporters should be asking him questions about the city rather than an investigation into his campaign. He was further questioned and told reporters to speak to his attorneys at the law firm WilmerHale about questions related to his campaign.
WilmerHale has reportedly been paid more than $700,000 in taxpayer funds to represent Adams in the case. Adams faces another charge involving alleged sexual harassment from 1993 when he was working as a police officer. Alex Spiro, a lawyer who has represented high profile clients, has been given the position of defending Mayor Adams in this case. The city’s taxpayer funds will also be used to pay the bill for Mayor Adams, because he was working for the city at the time of the alleged offense.
