(OurNationNews.com) In a seeming challenge to former president Donald Trump’s stranglehold on the Republican party, a former GOP representative for the state of Illinois has endorsed the candidacy of President Joe Biden.
Former representative Adam Kinzinger said that he never imagined that he would be endorsing a Democrat for president, but reasoned that Trump was and is a “direct threat” to the values that define America. In a video endorsement posted on Twitter / X, Kinzinger, a former military pilot, describes himself as a “proud conservative”, and said that unlike Trump, he believes that Biden will always protect American democracy, which he said makes America the “best country in the world.”
Kinzinger also had some harsh words for the former president, whom he said he voted for in 2020.
“He [Trump] doesn’t care about our country, he doesn’t care about you, he only cares about himself,” the former Illinois representative says in the video. Kinzinger points to the January 6, 2021 riots in the Capitol as an example of how Trump has “attacked the foundation of this nation.” Kinzinger also pointed to other more recent statements of Trump saying that he intends to be a “dictator” on day one of his presidency.
Kinzinger has been one of Trump’s harshest critics among the ranks of Republicans – in contrast to many in the party vying for his favor. Kinzinger was among the 10 members of the GOP who voted to impeach Trump in the aftermath of the January 6 riots.
Following Biden’s poor showing and decline that became apparent during the presidential debate however, Kinzinger suggested that it might not be a bad idea for the president to bow out of the race and hand over the reins to someone younger and more mentally fit to head the Democratic ticket.
“Democrats have to figure out how to put up the best candidate,” he said in an interview following the debate. However, Kinzinger doubled down on his claim that America’s fate would be in peril if Trump wins the election in November.
