(OurNationNews.com) A member of the House GOP has sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland demanding why the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana declined to prosecute a man who sent messages threatening to murder the congressman and his family.
Republican Indiana Representative Jim Banks and his family were threatened by a native of Fort Wayne, 33-year-old Aaron Thompson, who left menacing, violent, and expletive-laden voicemails with Bank’s office. In the messages, Thompson threatened to kill two of Banks’ three daughters, cajoling Banks to “pick which two daughters get shot”; shoot Banks’ wife; and “blow out” the congressman’s brain.
When Thompson was visited by the FBI in his home, he admitted to leaving the messages, saying that he was drunk at the time and disagreed with Banks’ political positions. In his social media accounts, Thompson also made a call for people to “vote Democrat.”
In his letter to the U.S. Attorney General, Banks cited a number of occasions when Garland condemned threats of violence against public officials, and a number of instances when the Attorney General’s office was “quick to act” on such threats against other Democratic lawmakers such as Eric Swalwell of California and Bennie Thompson of Mississippi.
“I have no doubt that you, as a husband and father yourself, would do anything to protect your family,” Banks wrote, adding, “but I want to know why you have refused to protect mine.”
Speaking to the media, Banks said that unlike Allen County (Indiana) Prosecutor Mike McAlexander and Deputy Prosecutor Adam Mildred who slapped charges against Thompson, who pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years’ probation.
A spokesperson for the Department of Justice denied Banks’ implications that the DOJ was partial towards threats made Democrats. The spokesperson pointed out that the agency had charged several individuals who threatened House Republicans such as Florida Representative Matt Gaetz and Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor-Greene.
