(OurNationNews.com) – Vincent Fong, a California Republican, was sworn into the House of Representatives on June 3 after winning the special election to replace Kevin McCarthy.
McCarthy was the first speaker of the House to be voted out of the position. After he was replaced by Speaker Mike Johnson, McCarthy announced he would be resigning from his position, which required a special election in California’s 20th congressional district.
Fong will finish out the term that ends in January 2025, and he will attempt to win his November election face-off to serve his first full term starting next year. Speaker Johnson swore Fong into the House chambers which now gives the GOP a two seat advantage over the Democrats. Fong thanked McCarthy for the years he served in the position and said he is honored to have the opportunity to represent his constituents in Congress.
Fong said some of his priorities are illegal immigration crossings at the southern border and inflation. Fong has served as a California state congressional representative for Bakersfield since 2016. After McCarthy announced his resignation, he endorsed Fong to replace him in the seat. Fong also received the endorsement of Donald Trump, who referred to Fong as a real Republican.
Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux was Fong’s Republican challenger in the May special election. Fong defeated the sheriff with 41.9% of the vote to Boudreaux’s 24% and the two will face-off again in the fall. Fong referred to McCarthy as a mentor that worked hard for decades to serve his California constituents in the United States Congress.
On June 2, McCarthy said that the American public should accept the results of the 2024 election. This comes as several Republicans have refused to say whether they would accept the results of the election as they want to ensure that the process is fair. McCarthy also criticized Democrats for not accepting the results of every Republican presidential election victory since George Bush.
