(OurNationNews.com) President Joe Biden has approved the state of Mississippi’s disaster declaration due to the onslaught of the devastating storms, flooding, straight-line winds, and tornadoes the Magnolia State experienced last April.
In a statement released by the White House, the president has ordered that federal funding and assistance be made available to residents from the Hinds, Hancock, Madison, Humphreys, Scott, and Neshoba counties in Mississippi. Federal assistance will also be extended to the local governments affected by the disaster in order to help with rebuilding and reconstruction efforts.
Individuals and families who have been adversely affected by the natural disasters can claim federal grants that will go towards temporary housing and/or repairs for their homes. Low-cost loans will also be made available for both individuals and business owners who are looking to recover from non-insured property loss or damage caused by the disasters.
In addition, the federal government will also provide hazard mitigation measures all across the state of Mississippi on a cost-sharing basis.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be responsible for overseeing the government’s assistance program in the state, with Jeremy C. Slinker serving as coordinator for recovery operations.
Mississippi can also request for any additional assistance at a later date if it so wishes, but the requests will be subject to further damage assessment, according to the White House release.
The release also directs individuals and business owners who are interested in seeking federal assistance to visit www.DisasterAssistance.gov or call the FEMA hotline at 800-621-3362.
The approval of the disaster declaration for Mississippi follows a similar approval made by the president for the state of Idaho, which also suffered from severe storm, landslides and mudslides, and flooding last April.
FEMA will also oversee federal recovery operations in the Gem State, with Theresa Y. Serata serving as coordinator and representative of the agency for recovery operations. Idaho will also receive the same federal assistance benefits.
