(OurNationNews.com) – The Biden administration warned dual citizens of the United States and Ukraine that they may be unable to leave Ukraine if they are of conscription age. Amidst the war with Russia, Ukraine made a rule that went into effect on June 1 to make sure they have enough military-aged men available.
The U.S. embassy released a statement and said that Ukrainian law doesn’t acknowledge dual citizenship. Therefore, all individuals with dual citizenship with Ukraine and another country are considered to be Ukrainian citizens. Under the new rule, they are indefinitely restricted from leaving the country. The embassy said their ability to influence Ukraine regarding the new rule is very limited. The embassy encourages all dual citizens to shelter in place and obey all local laws.
Furthermore, the embassy has suggested any U.S. males aged 18 to 60 to refrain from traveling to Ukraine if they have citizenship there. Otherwise, they may be stuck there indefinitely. One dual citizen commented to the press and said the move is probably just a codification of the current policy. The citizen suspected that he wouldn’t have been able to leave even before the announcement of this policy.
A spokesperson for the border guard service of Ukraine confirmed that the country doesn’t recognize dual citizenship. He said that they have frequently had individuals with dual citizenship pretend to be foreigners, but that will not be allowed.
President Biden said in a speech that the U.S. will continue to support Ukraine as another $225 million in military aid has been approved. The U.S. has sent conditional aid to say that the weapons and ammunition could not be used offensively against Russia. A new order from the U.S. allows Ukraine to strike across the border on Russian territory if the Russian military is currently attacking from that spot or planning an attack. President Biden met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and apologized for the delay of military aid.
