1st Debate Rules Listed Including Microphone Muting

(OurNationNews.com) President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump are set to face-off in their first debate for the upcoming presidential elections later this year, but with a number of new rules that were not present when they first clashed on stage four years ago.

For one, candidates’ microphones will be muted during each participant’s talk time, in an effort to ensure that either Biden or Trump can talk uninterrupted. During the last debate, Trump frequently ignored the moderator and constantly attacked Biden while the latter was speaking, prompting the then-vice president to retort, “Will you shut up, man?!”

There will also be no live audience for the debate, as Trump’s frequent jeers at Biden the last time they were on stage was a big hit with the studio audience – who also kept interrupting the debate in the process.

The debate will also not be overseen by the Commission on Presidential Debates. The agency, while bipartisan, has frequently been accused by the Trump camp of being biased towards the Democrats.

Both Trump and Biden have agreed to the new rules, and both men said that they would abide by them.

Other new rules include the inclusion of commercial breaks during the debate. The whole program is projected to last for around 90 minutes, and there will be two commercial breaks in between – as opposed to there being no commercial breaks in the past. However, the two men will not be allowed to consult with their campaign staff or even have their makeup retouched.

Another new rule is the removal of opening statements. Instead the debate will begin with a question directed to each candidate, where they will be given two minutes to respond. The candidates will then be given a minute each for the initial rebuttal, and then an additional minute for the follow-up rebuttal. The moderator can also give a bit of additional time at his or her discretion. At the end of the debate, the candidates will then be given two minutes each to deliver their closing statements.
